WASHINGTON – A resident of a Colesville retirement community has been charged with the murder of a 95-year-old veteran who lived in the same complex.
Montgomery County police say that Eric S. Dyson, 60, of the 500 block of Randolph Road, admitted that he stabbed Dan Belvin in his Randolph Village Senior Living apartment and said that it was in response to unwanted sexual advances from his elderly neighbor.
Dyson was arrested Tuesday and faces multiple charges related to theft, identity theft and using credit cards that belonged to Belvin, in addition to first-degree murder.
Belvin was found Monday afternoon by a building manager after a close friend expressed concerns about not seeing him. The building manager called police after checking Belvin’s apartment and finding the resident dead. Belvin was found with stab wounds to his upper body.
The next day, an apartment staff member saw Dyson driving Belvin’s car and reported it to police.
“During questioning, Dyson alleged he offered sexual favors for the victim in exchange for the use of the victim’s vehicle and money. He did admit to stabbing the victim. He said that it was in response to alleged unwelcome sexual advances,” says Cpl. Rebecca Innocente with Montgomery County police.
“(Dyson will) have his day in court and he can speak to what he believes or what their relationship involved,” Innocente says.
Detectives found notes Belvin had left himself reminding to ask for his car keys back. Police believe Dyson had been driving Belvin’s car even before his death.
Between when Belvin was last seen on Thursday, Feb. 19 and Dyson’s arrest, detectives say Dyson racked up $5,500 on Belvin’s credit cards. Dyson was captured on store surveillance cameras using the cards, according to police.
The Washington Post reported that Belvin served during World War II and the Korean War. Police say Belvin was retired from the Navy.
