WASHINGTON — The World Cup started Thursday with host country Russia defeating Saudi Arabia, 5-0.
Team USA, Italy and the Netherlands did not qualify for this year’s tournament. Soccer fans can take solace in the fact that FIFA announced on Wednesday that the 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
The championship game is scheduled for the morning of July 15.
