Md. ex-lawmaker’s campaign treasurer charged with misusing funds

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A former Maryland state lawmaker’s campaign treasurer has been charged with misusing campaign funds, the same charge to which the legislator recently pleaded guilty.

Prosecutors filed a wire fraud charge against Anitra Edmond on Monday, less than two weeks after former state Del. Tawanna Gaines pleaded guilty to a related charge that she used campaign funds for her personal benefit.

A court filing says Edmond is treasurer of “Friends of Tawanna P. Gaines,” the Prince George’s County Democrat’s campaign committee. The filing says Edmond also took campaign funds for her personal use and failed to disclose contributions on state campaign finance reports.

Court records don’t list an attorney for Edmond.

Gaines, who had served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2001, resigned less than week before she was charged.
