St. Mary’s Co. police investigate chaperone’s conduct at school dance

WASHINGTON — A female student at Leonardtown Middle School in St. Mary’s County said she was touched inappropriately by a male chaperone Friday during a school dance.

The student said a chaperone at a dance in the school’s cafeteria “touched her and made her feel uncomfortable,” according to a statement from St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office sent Saturday afternoon.

The chaperone is not an employee of St. Mary’s County Public schools.

Sheriff’s deputies and the school staff reviewed video from Friday’s dance and were not able to find evidence of the incident. However, the sheriff’s office is continuing to interview witnesses and parents in its investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact deputy Austin Schultz at 301-475-4200 or Austin.Schultz@stmarysmd.com.
