HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Authorities say a veteran police officer in western Maryland has been charged with dealing prescription drugs while on duty.
Officials said Friday that Hagerstown police sergeant Christopher Michael Barnett is charged with distribution and possession of prescription controlled dangerous substances.
The 45-year-old Barnett was taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police at his home Thursday evening after a source told police earlier that day that Barnett had engaged in illegal activity while on duty. Investigators were presented with video footage of Barnett providing a prescription narcotic to another person.
Barnett, who has been with the Hagerstown police in 2002, has been suspended without pay.
Barnett is charged with drug possession and distribution, theft and malfeasance in office. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.
