Maryland trooper fatally strikes pedestrian crossing highway

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — Maryland State Police say a pedestrian was killed when he crossed a highway in Ocean City into the path of an oncoming patrol vehicle.

Police said in a news release Saturday that Master Trooper James Price was on routine patrol in a marked SUV late Friday night when for reasons that are unclear, a man “reportedly darted” into the street.

Price tried to avoid the man but couldn’t. The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The news release says Price, a 17-year veteran of state police, was not injured. He has been put on routine administrative leave.

The pedestrian’s identity wasn’t immediately clear.

A state police crash team is investigating, and the findings will be presented to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
