WASHINGTON — Pepco customers have a chance to tell Maryland regulators just what they think about the utility’s request for a rate increase of about $104 million.
The members of the Maryland Public Service Commission, the panel that regulates utilities in the state, will hold the first of two hearings in Rockville Tuesday night.
The commission will hear public comments as the panel weighs Pepco’s request for an increase that will boost the average customer’s bill by $13.29 a month.
When the rate increase request was first announced in April, Pepco officials said it was not tied to its recent merger with Exelon, but was the result of the need to cover rising costs in the industry.
The last time Pepco requested a rate increase was in 2013, when the commission granted an $8.8 million increase. At the time, Pepco had asked for a $43 million boost.
Tuesday night’s meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Montgomery County’s Executive Office Building in Rockville. A second hearing will be held for Prince George’s County residents on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 6:30. p.m. at Prince George’s Community College in Largo.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story had stated that the rate hike was $127 million. The rate hike is about $104 million, and the cost to residential customers will be an extra $13.29 a month, not $15.80 a month.
