WASHINGTON –About a hundred cattle were on the loose in West Virginia and Maryland after an overnight crash Saturday.
Berkeley County dispatchers told WTOP that a tractor-trailer hauling cattle overturned on Interstate 81 at around 2 a.m. near the Potomac River, shutting down the southbound lanes for several hours.
The cattle got away from the scene and officials say they’ve been getting reports of cattle sightings throughout Berkeley County, West Virginia and across the state line in Washington County, Maryland.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office confirmed later in the morning that roughly 100 cattle escaped out of 102 that were on the truck. Several died in the accident.
No other injuries were reported.
