Tax-free weekend kicks off on Valentine’s Day in Maryland

WASHINGTON — Those wanting to save energy and save cash can take advantage of Maryland’s tax-free weekend during Valentine’s Day weekend.

Starting Saturday Feb. 14 and running through Monday shoppers in Maryland can purchase some Energy Star appliances without paying the state’s 6 percent sales tax.

It’s expected to cost the state around $600,000.

The following Energy Star items are part of the tax free holiday:

  • Air conditioners
  • Washers and dryers
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Boilers
  • Solar water heaters (tax-exempt at all times now)
  • Standard size refrigerators
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Programmable thermostats
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs
