WASHINGTON — With Amazon now taking proposals for a location for its second headquarters, area leaders got a sample of the region’s pitch to the tech giant.
Consultants told the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments board of directors Wednesday that the D.C. region is a strong contender because of its large and stable economy and its educated workforce.
Matt Felton of Datastory Consulting said the jobs Amazon would be looking for also line up well with jobs the D.C. region already supports. Those include executive, financial, legal, computer and mathematical positions.
However, some leaders expressed concerns that a lack of affordable housing in the region would be a liability during the selection process.
“We’ve been working with eight jurisdictions in the region,” said the Chuck Bean, executive director for the council. He said those jurisdictions include Montgomery, Prince George’s, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Arlington counties, as well as Alexandria and the District.
Jurisdictions will be able to use the information compiled by the Council of Governments in their proposals to Amazon.
The new headquarters would complement the company’s current base in Seattle and could support 50,000 jobs.
