As new storms loom, Pepco urges customers to prepare for outages

WASHINGTON — Pepco is urging customers to prepare for the possibility for more outages due to potentially damaging storms expected to arrive Thursday night.

The first of the round of thunderstorms are predicted to hit around midnight and continue into late Thursday morning, with heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 60 mph. A second wave is predicted to roll through Thursday afternoon, bringing with it the possibility of a tornado.

In the meantime, Pepco is encouraging customers to have an emergency kit on hand with items such as a flashlight, battery-powered clock and radio, extra batteries, non-perishable food, bottled water and a list of important phone numbers.

Pepco did not specify in a news release  issued Wednesday where the potential outages could fall nor did Pepco provide details on which customers should prepare for outages, but the company did state that  16,000 of its customers were left without power following Tuesday’s storm.

According to the news release, 150 internal linemen, 250 contractors and 180 tree-trimming personnel will be standing by. The utility company also said it would call on other utility companies such as Baltimore Gas & Electric, for help if need be.
