WASHINGTON — Isn’t winter over yet?

The unseasonably cold Saturday brought a mix of snow, sleet and hail to the D.C. area. The cold temperatures, gusty winds and a few snowflakes will continue throughout the afternoon.

The Washington Nationals have postponed today’s home game against the Miami Marlins. The game is rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday, May 14 at 4:05 p.m.

The team says all tickets for today’s game will be honored.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival announced the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival is canceled due to wind and weather.  There is no scheduled rain date.

It’s not a great day to be outside, unless you are taking pictures of the April snow showers falling in parts of our area today.

“This is a pretty wild weather pattern for the second weekend of April,” says NBC4 Meteorologist Steve Prinzivalli. “It’s cold enough that we are seeing a mixed bag of some wet snow, especially north and west of town.”

There’s even some graupel falling. “It’s kind of like a soft hail that hits your car and gently pings off,” Prinzivalli says.

There is a Wind Advisory from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday for gusts up to 50 mph that could damage trees and power lines.

A Freeze Warning is posted overnight through 10 a.m. Sunday. Protect plants that are sensitive to the cold and dress warmly.
