Metro, MARC returning to normal after a morning of problems

WASHINGTON — Metro reported problems and delays on five lines at various times Tuesday morning.

In the latest development, Metro reported at about 9 a.m. that the Green Line is single-tracking between College Park and Greenbelt due to a track problem outside College Park. All trains at College Park will be using the Branch Avenue platform, Metro says, adding that a cracked rail was discovered at about 9:10 a.m. They reported that single-tracking had ended shortly before 10.

It was only one of the problems that beset Metro Tuesday morning.

A track problem outside the Pentagon City station caused Metro to single-track between National Airport and Pentagon City on the Blue and Yellow lines for about an hour and a half. At 5:30 a.m., they estimated it would take about an hour to repair. At around 6:30 a.m., Metro said that outbound trains would bypass Pentagon City and Crystal City to minimize the single-tracking delays. At about 7, they reported that track repairs had been completed, but that residual delays remained.

At about 6 a.m., Metro then reported that a switch problem outside New Carrollton was prompting single-tracking on the Orange Line between New Carrollton and Cheverly. It was fixed after about 20 minutes, and normal service has been restored.

A switch problem at the Glenmont station caused delays in the direction of Shady Grove. Metro said at about 6:30 a.m. that it had been repaired, but that residual delays remained.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says none of the problems is weather-related.

Meanwhile, MARC reports that the frozen switches that held up Brunswick Line trains leaving Frederick have been repaired, but the trains are running up to 80 minutes late. Metro will honor MARC tickets.
