WASHINGTON (AP) _ Federal investigators are looking at a similar incident that happened in February as they try to pin down the cause of an electrical malfunction on Washington’s subway system that led to one death.
The National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that investigators have collected evidence from a malfunction that caused smoke inside a tunnel in northern Virginia. No one was injured in that incident on Feb. 11. The previous month, one woman died and more than 80 others were sickened after smoke filled a downtown Washington tunnel. Ventilation fans didn’t work properly, and it took firefighters 30 minutes to reach the passengers.
The NTSB says investigators are looking at the electrical components that failed in February to see if there are any similarities with the Jan. 12 malfunction.
