WASHINGTON — What do Howard University in D.C., St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland and James Madison University in Virginia have in common? All three have landed on BuzzFeed’s list of the 27 most underrated colleges in America.
It can be fairly argued that Howard, one of the nation’s most prestigious historically black colleges, is more famous than underrated, but it’s No. 18 on BuzzFeed’s list. A member of the BuzzFeed community writes that “class sizes are great … students know how to have fun while remaining studious.”
St. John’s College, in Annapolis, is not as well known as its neighbor, the U.S. Naval Academy, but the liberal arts school must be doing something right — it’s been educating students since 1696. On BuzzFeed’s list, it’s cited for producing “creative and capable minds that are willing and able to continue to learn for the rest of their lives.”
James Madison University is more than a two-hour drive from the D.C. area, but plenty of the Harrisonburg, Virginia, school’s alumni live and work in the region.
A JMU supporter writes on BuzzFeed’s list, “We have school spirit, tradition, beautiful campus, secret tunnels and legends …”
Other schools that made the BuzzFeed list include Drexel, in Philadelphia; University of Utah, in Salt Lake City; and Tulane, in New Orleans.
