Roundup: Local schools scramble to make up snow days

WASHINGTON — With a brutally snowy winter, local school systems are calculating, planning, and in some cases waiting to find out whether they will have to extend this year’s school calendar.

Maryland’s State Board of Education is expected to consider counties’ requests to allow students to attend fewer than the required 180 days of instruction on March 24.

Montgomery County’s Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers sent a request Tuesday, asking to waive 3 days. If the waiver is denied, three days will be added to the end of the school  year.

Here is a round-up of local school systems’ plans to deal with this winter’s snow days:

Alexandria — Friday, April 17 will be a full day for traditional calendar schools. Friday, May 8 will be a full day for Samuel W. Tucker Elementary.

Anne Arundel County — Shortening spring break. Students will go to school on March 30.

Arlington County — Making up time by going full days, instead of half-days,  on three Wednesdays (April 15, 22, 29)

Baltimore — No changes to original calendar.
