Earth Day has been celebrated in some form since 1970, and these days, it is held every year on April 22. Traditions include planting trees, picking up litter, getting outdoors and rethinking wasteful daily habits.
Retailers have a tradition, too: offering promos. Earth Day promotions run the gamut from deals on energy-efficient appliances to free reusable tote bags to reduced prices on outdoor items.
This year, businesses will be offering the following eco-conscious deals for budget-conscious shoppers.

Amazon. Get 20 percent off Warehouse deals during Earth Week (now through April 22). Note that this sale is running on Amazon’s Warehouse site only. This section sells returned, refurbished and used items.
Best Buy. The retailer traditionally runs an appliance sales event that coincides with Earth Day, and this year, it’s calling it the April Savings Event. The event features up to 35 percent off appliances and runs through April 25. Many of the on-sale items are Energy Star-certified, meaning they’ve met energy-efficient guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. Examples include an LG 4.5-Cubic Foot Eight-Cycle High-Efficiency Top-Loading Washer for $599 ($120 off) and a Whirlpool 21.9-Cubic Foot Bottom-Freezer Fridge for $1,099 ($250 off).
Buffalo Exchange. The thrift chain will offer select clothing for $1 per piece and donate the proceeds to the 5 Gyres Institute, which combats ocean pollution. This sale takes place the day before Earth Day (Saturday, April 21). Check your local store’s hours.
CafePress. The customized-gift site is offering up to 40 percent off reusable totes. Fittingly, the Earth Day designs are marked down nearly across the board. Bags featuring pro-environment and green-friendly designs and slogans are marked down to between $11.95 and $14.95 (usual prices are $19.99 to $22.99).

Caribou Coffee. If you buy the Caribou Coffee Earth Day tumbler for $39.99, you’ll get free coffee for the rest of April, plus $3 specialty drinks, which equates to a discount of between 50 cents and $1, depending on the drink you order.
Goodwill. Every time you shop at Goodwill, you’re reducing waste by buying secondhand clothing and goods. On April 22, Goodwill stores across the country will give you a little extra motivation to buy used by offering 20 percent off purchases of $20 or more.
Ikea. The home goods store is once again running its annual Earth Day event. This year, the Make Room for Nature Event, which runs Saturday and Sunday of Earth Day weekend (9:30 a.m to 4 p.m. both days) gets you $25 off a purchase of $150 or more. Visit Ikea’s site for the coupon. You can also sign up for sustainability workshops. Space is limited, so reserve your spot via the website. Ikea Family members get additional perks, including giveaways, throughout the weekend.
Natural Grocers. The organic grocery chain, which has locations primarily in the Western U.S., will reward shoppers on April 22. While supplies last, get a free reusable shopping bag with purchase. Cashiers will also be giving out $25 gift cards randomly every hour. Select items will be marked down April 20 through April 22, including natural beauty products, eco-friendly detergent and organic snacks.
