WASHINGTON — Some of the region’s swankiest eateries and hotels are getting extra attention after more than 30 made AAA’s list of top-tier establishments.
On Friday, AAA announced the hotels and restaurants that earned the Four or Five Diamond Rating during the past 12 months and the list includes 33 D.C. area locations. The rating is AAA’s highest designations for hotels and restaurants and represent the upper echelon of the hospitality industry.
The local restaurant with the longest Five Diamond tenure is The Inn at Little Washington Dining Room in Washington, Virginia. The restaurant, under the leadership of Chef Patrick O’Connell, has maintained the rating for 27 consecutive years.
This year, AAA gave the Five Diamond rating to 121 hotels and 63 restaurants.
New this year to the list is the Capella Washington, D.C. The Georgetown hotel received a Four Diamond rating.
A total of 2,233 establishments — 1,544 hotels and 689 restaurants — received the Four Diamond rating from AAA.
“It is all about heavenly cuisine and haute hospitality. Four and Five Diamond hotels and restaurants provide guests with a personalized experience and attentive service in comfortable, high quality surroundings,” AAA Mid-Atlantic Spokesman John Townsend said in a news release.
“These establishments consistently exceed the expectations of the most discriminating traveler – the AAA inspector. We are proud to have these dedicated businesses in our region.”
To determine the ratings, AAA inspectors visit and score more than 58,000 hotels and restaurants over the course of the year. Establishments at the Four and Five Diamond rating levels make up just 3.9 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively, of the hotels and restaurants visited.
AAA has released the hotel and restaurant rankings for 79 years.
