Rethinking monogamy: Relationship expert discusses evolving paradigm

WASHINGTON — Is monogamy outdated?

Monogamy has changed, says Andrea Syrtash, a relationship expert and dating columnist.

“We used to get married because we needed to, and now we get married because we want to — so the paradigm is very different. We have options now, and not everyone wants to be partnered in a monogamous long-term relationship.”

Syrtash says some people may be scared of monogamy because they are seeing both stability and excitement, and don’t realize they can coexist.

“Monogamy teaches us about partnership, and how to compromise some of our needs in favor of someone else’s needs,” she says.

Syrtash’s book, “He’s Just Not Your Type (And That’s a Good Thing): How to Find Love Where You Least Expect It,” was released Tuesday as an audiobook.
