Month of March sees an increase in divorces

WASHINGTON – The start of spring may mean warmer temperatures, but some marriages may find themselves in a deep chill.

A new analysis finds that March is “Divorce Month,” with more filings and online searches for divorce-related information, according to FindLaw.com. The website’s research found that divorces spike in January, but continue to rise and peak in late March.

Divorce attorney Tim Hoch tells CW33 in Dallas that the month’s trend is part of a “spring cleaning,” when unhappy couples attempt a three-month plan.

“We call January the decision month, February the planning month and then March is the filing month,” Hoch told the station.

According to FindLaw.com, holiday stress and depression may lead to cheating, which in turn leads to post-New Year’s divorce filings.

Another reason divorce may be delayed until after the holidays may be income taxes, as marital status at the end of the year determines how you’ll file.
