10 nutrition podcasts to add to your playlist

Interested in learning more about nutrition, but don’t have the time? Nutrition podcasts might just be your ticket! It’s a great way to dive into a topic or deepen your understanding of a subject, since podcasts can be downloaded and listened to whenever you have the chance, whether on the treadmill or commuting to work.

Of course, there is the issue of which podcasts to choose — there are endless possibilities and a wide range of quality. So you’ll want to choose wisely. One good rule of thumb when evaluating nutrition podcasts is to make sure there is a registered dietitian involved. That way, you know the content being delivered is based on actual science, not just someone’s opinion.

To start, here are 10 podcasts I’d suggest. Each offer a different perspective on nutrition, and all are managed by registered dietitians.

Nutrition Diva’s Quick and Dirty Tips. Dietitian Monica Reinagel dishes out a fresh topic about three times every month. Her posts are about 10 minutes or less, and typically focus on a question or problem, like her recent post on how to slow down the muscle loss that occurs as we age.

Sound Bites. If you’re ready to move your nutrition understanding to the next level, beyond the simple tips and advice and into the science behind it all, then you might be interested in this podcast hosted by dietitian Melissa Joy Dobbins. For each episode, Dobbins interviews experts in the fields of nutrition, agriculture and health. Recent guests have included experts such as the Illinois Health Teacher of the Year, a professor of nutrition and food studies, a Michigan dairy farmer and a dietitian cookbook author.

Breaking Down Nutrition. Short on time, but want to learn something new? This podcast offers quick sessions of five minutes or less, led by dietitians Susan Mitchell and Regina Ragone. Some examples of recent topics include “Busting Sugar Myths” and “If You Eat Raw Dough, Will You Lose Your Cookies?” There is a companion podcast for medical professionals, as well.

Real Food Radio. Providing longer episodes for download (about 30 minutes or so), and run by dietitian Ayla Withee, this podcast focuses on a broad range of topics, including postpartum nutrition and eating well while traveling.

Love, Food. The tagline of this podcast is “peace from emotional eating, binge eating, eating disorders, and negative body image,” and that is indeed the focus of each episode. Managed by dietitian and self-declared “food peace promoter,” Julie Duffy Dillon, this podcast offers episodes lasting about a half hour each that are perfect for someone struggling with the dark side of dieting.

Posts focus primarily on weight struggles and eating issues, with topics such as cultivating body positivity in kids and health at every size.

The Nourished Child. Newly developed and just released on iTunes, this podcast offers advice about kids’ nutrition from top childhood nutrition expert and dietitian Jill Castle. Learn about feeding picky eaters, helping kids reach a healthy weight and the nutrients babies need most.
