The new fuel for exercise: Maple syrup?

WASHINGTON — It may seem like the perfect example of empty calories, but some experts are saying maple syrup may be worth its weight in high-powered exercise.

The website Shape reports that maple syrup might be exactly the thing you want to consume during a run: It’s glucose and almost nothing else — no fat or fiber to slow down your system — but it also has a lower glycemic index than other sugars, so it keeps you fueled longer.

Also, it has other nutrients, such as manganese, zinc, potassium and antioxidants, owner of weight management and sports nutrition service Alexandra Caspero tells Shape.

It’s very important to remember that this is only for when you’re in the middle of a long run or other high-intensity physical activity — otherwise, the sugar catches up with you.

The Vermont syrup company Slopeside Syrup has created UnTapped, a quick-opening gel packet with maple syrup, which it has started to sell in outdoor stores and will soon sold at some L.L. Bean locations.
