Let the games begin again.

The Paralympic Games opened Wednesday as some 4,400 athletes with disabilities, permanent injuries or impairments prepare to compete for 549 medals across 22 sports over 11 days in Paris.

Several D.C.-area athletes are competing in the event, which runs through Sept. 8. Daniel Romanchuk, a 26-year-old wheelchair track and field athlete from Mount Airy, Maryland, took home gold for Team USA in the men’s 5000m T54 Final, and also won bronze in the 400m in the same competition class.

Zachary Shattuck, a 28-year-old swimmer, also from Mount Airy, won his first ever Paralympic medal in Paris as part of USA’s mixed 4×50 freestyle relay team, which won silver.
