Judging from U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of best Labor Day car deals, there is money to be saved if you skip the pool and instead soak up that sunshine in a dealership lot.
“This is the end of the summer selling season for car manufacturers, so there’s a lot of pressure on them to move out the current crop of 2019 model year cars” before the new model year begins, said Jamie Page Deaton, executive editor of U.S. News Best Cars.
That’s especially the case this Labor Day weekend. There’s a little bit of excess inventory, she said, and new car sales have slowed a bit after a couple of big years.
“So when it comes to deals this time around, you know you’ve got the seasonality, and you’ve got slowing new car sales really putting buyers in the driver’s seat when it comes to finding a good deal,” Page Deaton said.
Nine vehicles made this year’s list, which include no-interest financing on SUV, sport and luxury models. One of the more noteworthy deals is for the 2019 Toyota Sienna: 0% financing for 60 months. The Sienna is the only minivan on the market that has all-wheel drive, she said, “and Toyota rarely offers 0% financing, because their cars tend to be in such high demand.”
Hyundai offers the same terms — 0% for 60 months — on the 2019 Hyundai Kona. The subcompact SUV was the 2019 North American Utility of the Year. “It comes as a fully electric vehicle as well, so there’s a lot of options,” Page Deaton said.
There’s also the 2019 Kia Stinger (0% financing for 75 months), which offers BMW-like performance at a lower price. “It’s really luxurious and has excellent handling characteristics — great acceleration,” she said.
While some deals will run out on Sept. 2, others will last through September. Page Deaton recommends calling first to ensure the deal is in effect before heading to the lot with that checkbook.
