Car Review: Kick it old school in the 2023 Lexus GX460 before its big makeover

What an old-school luxury SUV the 2023 Lexus GX460 is in its final year before a big makeover. (WTOP / Mike Parris)

In the luxury SUV market, the players are usually modern, car-based rather than off-road ready. Lexus marches to a different drummer with the old-school GX460, sporting full-time, four-wheel drive and a last-chance, smooth V-8 engine. The GX460 will be redesigned for 2024.

The GX is very capable off-road especially with the optional off-road package that adds crawl control and multi-terrain select. Some of these are turned into overhanding rides with just few mods to be a serious vehicle to get away and explore. The GX460 is comfortable and very hushed on pavement; however, rough, bumpy pavement can cause a shutter or two. The V-8 engine is quiet and pulls the big SUV with ease. Just don’t expect very good MPG.

The look of the GX460 hasn’t changed very much over the years. It’s still a tough-looking SUV that sits tall. The optional Sport design package enhances the look with gray 19″ wheels, plus special front and rear bumper spoilers that give it a more updated look. The Atomic Silver paint color works very nicely with the GX460.

Inside the GX460, you’ll see that the interior is behind some other newer vehicles in the class. The 10.3-inch touch screen is smaller than most of the competition, however it’s a step up from previous GX models. It’s very easy to use because the controls are large knobs, switches or buttons. In Lexus fashion, the fit and finish is pleasing to the eye with soft Semi-Aniline leather and wood trim. The second-row captain’s chairs make using the third much row easier. The cargo space behind the third row is very limited and the floor height leads to a tight third row for passengers. This will be addressed in the new 2024 version.

Cost: $64,935; as tested $71,960

MPG: 15 MPG City; 19 MPG Highway (sticker). I managed 16.2 mpg in 260 miles of mixed driving.

Options: $1,145 Mark Levinson premium surround system $1,570 off road package; $140 carpet cargo mat; $2,020 Sport design package; $655 tow hitch with ball mount; $75 cargo net; $345 all-weather floor liners with cargo mat

Safety: Lexus Safety System; pre-collision system with pedestrian detection; high-speed dynamic radar cruise control; lane departure alert; intelligent high beam headlights; blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert

Things to know: It’s your last chance to get an off-road luxury SUV with a V-8. The GX460 is still a popular SUV that’s as happy off-road as it is comfortable driving to work.

Pros:

  • Full-time, four-wheel drive means the GX460 is ready for all conditions
  • You sit up high with great vision out of the vehicle
  • Everything is easy to use with big buttons and knobs

Cons:

  • V-8 power and full-time 4X4 hurts fuel economy
  • Little storage space when all three rows are in use
  • Third row seat is best used for children
