Car Review: Toyota toughens up the popular RAV4 with the new TRD off-road version

Not many people take an SUV or crossover off the beaten path, but off-road capable versions are still big sellers.

Usually the off-road option is reserved for bigger SUVs and trucks. Toyota has bestowed its off-road TRD name to the RAV4.

The RAV4 TRD Off-Road has more aggressive tires and a specially-tuned suspension. It might not be ready for rock climbing, but the AWD system plus good ground clearance allows for some light off-road duty. With the heavy-duty suspension, the ride didn’t suffer at all; still remaining compliant.

Outside the RAV4 TRD Off-Road strikes a tougher tone with blacked-out trim and 18″ wheels. It seems that the RAV4 TRD Off-Road sits higher than other versions of the RAV4.

This off-road version does not trade off the luxury items, either. It has all the goodies inside with heated and ventilated leather trimmed seats, NAV and a premium sound system for a bigger price.

Like all RAV4 models, space is plentiful for both front and rear seat riders and the cargo space pleases.

Cost: $35,180; as tested $41,780

Things to know: The ever-popular RAV4 has a new version that’s more off-road capable. TRD Off-Road add rugged looks and the ability to keep going when the pavement stops and the dirt starts.

Pros:

  • The RAV4 TRD Off-Road adds style and some surprising off-road capability
  • Pleasing ride over multiple road surfaces and street conditions
  • Added technology; Apple CarPlay and now Android Auto is available

Cons:

  • Costly when loaded with all the options
  • Not the quickest compact crossover on the market
  • Doesn’t enjoy being pushed on back roads
