Car Review: Mazda moves toward other luxury brands with the 2021 Mazda CX-9 Signature

Even though it is not a large automaker, Mazda has carved out a market niche with cars that are fun to drive. Lately, it has been moving upscale and doing more to stand out.

You can tell right away when you hop in the CX-9 Signature that it is a luxurious ride. Quilted Nappa, leather-trimmed heated and ventilated seats offer a good place to park it for a trip. The second row of heated captain’s chairs are a nice addition. The third row is a bit tight for adults, but children will find decent space. Mazda steps up the interior with wood trim and a larger 10.25-inch center display with a knob on the center console.

Luckily, the Mazda CX-9 still offers a driver-friendly personality with higher handling limits than other three-row crossovers in its class. Now it is more hushed on the road than before, so this can be a serene cruiser. The turbo four-cylinder engine provides good punch even with five people onboard. You can use regular fuel in the CX-9, or if you want all the power, switch over to premium fuel for a faster ride.

For 2021, the Mazda CX-9 Signature get a special grill treatment and LED lighting that sets it apart from other CX-9 models. The overall look has not changed much since the redesign four year ago. It still looks fresh and new today. The CX-9 looks more sleek and curvy, less like a big hulking three-row crossover, which makes for an attractive ride.

Cost: $46,605; as tested $48,200.

MPG: 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway; I managed 23.2 mpg in 296 miles of mixed driving.

Safety: i-ACTIVSENSE; smart brake support; lane departure warning system; lane-keep assist; Mazda radar cruise control with stop & high beam control; driver attention alert; blind spot monitoring system with rear cross traffic alert; adaptive front lighting system; 360-degree view monitor; front and rear parking sensors.

Options: $495 Machine Gray Metallic.
