Car Review: 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve is big on luxury and in price

Just a few years ago, it seemed the Lincoln brand was on the way out with old products that didn’t really move the needle. Times have changed, and now Lincoln has released several vastly improved vehicles.

New for 2020, Lincoln turns its magic touch to the large three-row mid-sized SUV. The new Aviator really pushes the Lincoln brand upscale with a new look and very luxurious feel.

It comes with a hefty price tag if you choose the loaded Reserve trim level. Still, for $76,000, you are surrounded by a top-notch luxury interior that gives other luxury brands a run for the money.

The exterior is very handsome, with looks of the popular Lincoln Navigator, but in a manageable size. A new twin turbo V6 lives under the hood and provides effortless acceleration when needed.

Otherwise it’s a hushed partner working a slick-shifting, 10-speed automatic transmission. I found the ride plush and a bit soft, even with large 22″ wheels.

It also pays dividends on the highway, offering plenty of quiet as you and the passengers are greeted to a smooth comfortable ride. But it’s not very happy being pushed on back roads. A sporty-handling SUV it is not.

The amount of technology in the new Aviator, from the latest safety tech and driver’s aids, is impressive. Lincoln came to the fight well-armed.

Cost: $58,700, as tested $76,310.

MPG: 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, I managed 18.2 mpg in 309 miles of mixed driving.

Safety: 360-degree camera, active park assist plus, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, lane keeping, blind spot detection with CTA, evasive steering assist, personal safety system, pre-collision assist, Lincoln co-pilot 360.

Options: $10,125 equipment group 202A, $3,390 convenience package, $3,000 dynamic handling package.

Things to know: The new Lincoln Aviator is a luxury SUV that proves the American luxury brands are still here and alive. The 2020 Aviator pushes the three-row mid-sized luxury crossover/SUV market upscale.

Pros:

  • Shares styling cues with larger more expensive Navigator
  • Interior is big on luxury finishes and comfort
  • Twin turbo V6 packs plenty of power

Cons:

  • Gets pricey with higher trim levels and options
  • Not the best rear vision out the rear window
  • Third row of seats best for children and smaller adults
This is the Aviator's cargo space when all three rows of seats are in use.
