What will new Inova Alexandria Hospital look like at old Landmark Mall?

Plans are moving forward for the huge redevelopment of Landmark Mall as the new home for Inova Alexandria Hospital.

Concept designs for the Virginia hospital campus have been presented to the city.

The hospital’s move to the West End of Alexandria is seen as way to revitalize the area.

Inova plans to invest $1 billion to build the new medical campus and relocate its more than 2,000 employees from the current Inova Alexandria Hospital on Seminary Road to the location off Interstate 395.

The recently released plans for the 231-bed hospital detail a level two trauma center, a cancer center and a specialty care center across three buildings. The property is also slated as a “mixed-use, walkable urban village” with residential, retail, and entertainment spaces.

The initial concept layout for the Inova medical campus was filed on March 4 and included three buildings and a parking lot in the space previously held by Landmark Mall.

A level two trauma center, a cancer center and a specialty care center equipped with helipads and parking spaces are also marked on the campus concept maps.

The hospital campus will extend to match the curvature of Interstate 395/Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway as it intersects with Duke Street.

Construction is expected to start in 2023,  and the first buildings could open by 2025.
