Crystal Pepsi making a comeback

Welcome back (again), Crystal Pepsi.

PepsiCo (ticker: PEP) is bringing back its cult favorite clear soda in retail and food service outlets this summer, in both the U.S. and Canada. Specifically, large retailers will start selling the drink July 11 in Canada, while the U.S. won’t see it until Aug. 8.

The suggested price per 20-ounce bottle is $1.79.

The relaunch will arrive in conjunction with “The Crystal Pepsi Trail,” a nod to the ’90s computer game “The Oregon Trail.” Those interested can access the game starting July 7.

Pepsi first teased a bout of Crystal Pepsi nostalgia back in December, holding a sweepstakes via its Pepsi Pass app.

Both Pepsi and Coca-Cola Co. (KO) are in unique positions, as American soda consumption has been on quite the decline — hitting a 30-year-low in the U.S., reports Fortune.

Each has tried different methods to keep customers happy as of late. Pepsi’s attempt to reformulate its signature Diet Pepsi without aspartame left consumers unhappy, so the company is putting a Diet Pepsi aspartame version back on shelves.

Coca-Cola has tried nostalgia pushes similar to Pepsi, including reviving another ’90s drink, Surge, and Hi-C Ecto-Cooler, reports Ad Age.

With any kind of soda industry tinkering, there’s one lesson in the back of everyone’s minds: don’t be the next New Coke disaster.
