WASHINGTON — A woman was killed Monday night after a tree fell on her home in Burke, Virginia.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the home in the 5900 block of Burnside Landing Drive around 8:45 p.m. and found a large tree had fallen through.
Battalion chief Willie Bailey said that when firefighters went inside, they found the woman dead. The woman’s husband was unharmed.
On Tuesday, Fairfax County police identified the victim as 63-year-old Beverly Krizanovic.
“This is very rare,” Bailey said. “But, obviously, with all the rain in the past couple of days and things of that nature, the roots of these trees have really loosened up.”
The tree had fallen onto “approximately a quarter of the home,” Bailey said. The tree was around 2 to 3 feet in diameter and about 60 feet tall.
Around 40 firefighters and a technical rescue team are at the scene. The crews are trying to stabilize the scene so they can investigate exactly what happened.
