Gunshot wound killed 17-year-old found dead Centreville: medical examiner

WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old found dead in Centreville last week died from a gunshot wound, the medical examiner determined.

Matthew Ortega, 17, was found dead in the 13500 block of Jeb Stuart Square in Centreville on Feb. 14. A delivery truck driver called police after seeing his body.

Initially, police were not able to identify the body, and released an image of the distinctive sweatshirt the teen was wearing.

On Thursday, police said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Ortega died from a single gunshot wound to his upper body.

Police have not released any details about possible suspects in the shooting, but noted detectives are following leads in the case. Anyone with information about the case can contact police at 703-246-7800.

Ortega was an 11th grade student at Centreville High School. Dave Jagels, principal of the school, described Ortegas a “bright and engaging student who will be greatly missed by our school community.”
