WASHINGTON — The Fairfax County police say a Reston, Virginia, high school booster club has been ripped off, and the group’s former treasurer has been arrested.
Robert Clinage, 58, is charged with embezzling at least $60,000 from the South Lakes High School Booster Club.
Donations and money raised for high school athletic booster clubs might typically cover things such as equipment, uniforms, transportation and the year-end pizza party. So members of the Seahawks Booster Club at South Lakes High noticed when a large amount of money went missing from its account.
That was shortly after Clinage stepped down last year, police said. An investigation was initiated in December 2016; Clinage turned himself in on July 12, police said.
Clinage did not work for the school; booster clubs are independent of school systems.
He has a court hearing scheduled for Sept. 20.
