Man dies in chain-reaction crash on I-495

WASHINGTON — A man was killed in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 495 in Springfield, Virginia on Thursday night.

The crash happened at around 10:15 p.m., near Exit 57A of Interstate 95/495.

A Toyota Highlander traveling south suddenly swerved toward the exit, striking a Jeep in the process, Virginia State police said.

Then, police said, the Toyota driver abruptly stopped in the travel lane and got out of the vehicle — triggering another series of crashes.

A Dodge Caravan unable to brake in time struck the Toyota. Then another vehicle struck the Dodge. As a result, the man who had gotten out the Toyota was thrust onto the road. He died at the scene.

State police said they were still in the process of notifying the man’s family and did not release his name. Police said the Caravan driver and two passengers were treated at a nearby hospital.

Police are still investigating the crash. The incident shut down the Outer Loop of the interstate until 3:30 a.m. Friday.
