Man dies in Fairfax apartment fire

WASHINGTON — A man has died following a fire in the second floor bedroom of an apartment in Fairfax, Virginia.

Firefighters from the City of Fairfax Fire Department and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at 10171 Mosby Woods Drive in Fairfax around 2:45 a.m. When they arrived, the rescue units discovered smoke conditions on the second floor, according to Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Barrero with the Fairfax County Fire Marshal’s Office.

“During their search they did find one male that they removed from the building and tried resuscitative efforts but they were unsuccessful and he has died at this time,” Fairfax City Assistant Fire Chief Andrew Vita told NBC Washington in an interview on the scene of the fire.

The apartment building has 10 units. Out of precaution, 19 adults and two children had to leave their homes and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Vita said the fire was contained to the man’s apartment. The victim’s name has not yet been released.

“The door was closed and the windows didn’t fail so smoke didn’t really get through the rest of the complex, so hopefully later on this afternoon the rest of the residents will be able to reoccupy,” Vita told NBC Washington.

The City of Fairfax Fire Department, the State Fire Marshal and the police department are investigating the cause of the fire.
