WASHINGTON — A woman is dead after a bedroom fire in the City of Fairfax on Saturday.
About 11 p.m., police and fire officials went to a townhouse in the Comstock neighborhood. Once they arrived, officials realized an 87-year-old woman had been exposed to smoke, and that an upstairs bedroom was on fire, according to the City of Fairfax Fire Department.
The woman and her son were rescued from the house on Bradwater Street and resuscitation efforts continued. The fire was confined to the upstairs bedroom and extinguished before affecting other townhouse units.
The woman was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The fire was caused by the use of incense in the bedroom. No working smoke detectors were found in the home.
