1 dead, 3 injured in Springfield house fire

WASHINGTON — One man is dead and three other people displaced after a large house fire in Springfield, Virginia, Thursday morning.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews responded to the single-family house fire at 5631 Southhampton Drive at 6:04 a.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the back of the house.

Crews rescued Paul W. Church, 56, from the second floor. He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he later died.

Church lived at the home, the fire department says.

Capt. George Hollingsworth says three other people also were taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. They had managed to get out of the home on their own.

The fire’s cause is under investigation.
