George Takei debates ‘Star Trek’ vs. ‘Star Wars’

WASHINGTON — It’s a debate that has raged among sci-fi fans forever.

Which is better: “Star Wars” or “Star Trek?”

The debate has recently reignited, now that director J.J. Abrams has successfully rebooted both franchises with “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015).

But now, actor George Takei is weighing in.

Takei, who memorably played Sulu across William Shatner’s Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy’s Mr. Spock, obviously sides with his own series “Star Trek.”

But what’s his reasoning?

Takei tells Fortune that “Star Trek” has much more social commentary.

“My preference is ‘Star Trek.’ Yes, science fiction, imaginative, great adventure, but Gene Roddenberry had another dimension. He had a vision of a future about what America … the global society could be. [His] genius came to flower in addressing contemporary issues and be able to present them as futuristic,” Takei tells Fortune.

However, Takei says “Star Wars” is “space fantasy,” while admitting it is “enormously popular.”
