Shootings mark a violent Memorial Day weekend in DC

WASHINGTON — Police in D.C. are investigating a series of shootings that happened across the District over the long weekend.

As of 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, at least nine people have been shot, and three of them have died as a result of the shootings.

A man and a woman were killed in a shooting on Galveston Street Southwest on Saturday night.

Police identified the victims as 40-year-old Jaquon Helm and 35-year-old Venius Badgett. Both were from Southwest D.C.

In a separate incident, police said they have no suspects in the death of 39-year-old Alexander Mosby. He was found with a gunshot wound outside an apartment complex on Savannah Terrace in Southeast early Saturday morning.

Police are looking a silver Infinity SUV in connection with the shooting.

On Sunday morning, one man was shot in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Junior Avenue Southeast.

There were four other shootings around the District that left six people injured on Friday night into early Saturday morning.

Editor’s note: D.C. police initially said the shooting that killed the man and the woman on Saturday night happened on Martin Luther King Junior Avenue Southwest. In a news release sent at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, police listed the address as Galveston Street Southwest.
