WASHINGTON — A woman is in critical condition Wednesday morning after she apparently jumped from a burning apartment in Southeast D.C.

D.C. Fire and EMS responded to the fire on the second floor of a three-story building in the 100 block of Wayne Place Southeast just before 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

When first responders arrived, they found the woman in front of the building, where witnesses told them she had jumped according to D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo.

She was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

The fire was quickly extinguished.

According to a tweet from D.C. Fire and EMS, a candle started the fire.
