WASHINGTON — A D.C. teen has been arrested in connection with the death of a 16-year-old girl who was shot in the head near Gallaudet University last week.

Police said Dekale Bowman, 18, of Northeast D.C., has been charged with second-degree murder while armed.

Taiyania Thompson, 16, was shot in the face in an apartment on Mount Olivet Road Northeast in the afternoon of Jan. 25. She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died Sunday.

Police have said they believe the shooting was related to a domestic dispute. In court documents, a witness said Bowman shot Thompson, a sophomore in high school, in the face by accident as they pointed guns at each other. “I love her,” the witness reported Bowman said; I did not mean to do it.”

Bowman is due in court again in March.
