WASHINGTON — The murder of 17-year-old Jamahri Sydnor, the daughter of a D.C. police officer, in August was a personal loss for many in the D.C. department.
After months of looking for the last man involved in the shooting, police said the suspect — James Mayfield, 18, of Northeast D.C. — is in custody and has been charged with first-degree murder.
Shortly after the Aug. 10 shooting, police arrested 21-year-old Philip Carlos McDaniel, of Northeast D.C. He was charged with assault with intent to kill.
Months later, Robert Moses, 18, of Northeast D.C. was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in October. Court documents from Moses’ arrest identified Mayfield as the third and last man involved in the shooting.
Investigators described the attack as an act of gang retaliation, according to court documents. At the moment Moses and Mayfield allegedly began shooting, Sydnor, a recent Woodrow Wilson High School graduate, was driving down the street with a friend, police said.
Responding to calls of shots fired, officers found Sydnor suffering from a gunshot wound, hit by a stray bullet, court documents said. She died days before she was scheduled to start classes at Florida A&M University.
She was one of three people injured in the neighborhood, police said.
Mayfield faces a minimum sentence of 30 years in prison in the District.
