WASHINGTON — He had a red cap, a sack full of toys and the kids sure were excited to see him.
But it wasn’t Santa Claus who surprised the Boys & Girls Club of D.C. this week.
It was former president Barack Obama.
“There’s no better time than the holiday season to reach out and give back to our communities,” Obama said Thursday in a tweet. “Great to hear from young people at the Boys & Girls Club in DC today.”
The 44th president shared a photo of the visit on Twitter.

Katie Hill, the president’s communications director, also tweeted a video of the surprise visit. In the video, Obama, clad in khakis, a leather jacket, and a Santa hat, carries a brightly colored sack, as the children call out “Obama!” and rush to shake his hand.

When he was president, Obama and his family frequently visited community centers throughout D.C. He famously donated the White House swing set used by his daughters to a Southeast D.C. shelter after he left office in January.
