DC police: Woman assaulted by man she thought was driver of ‘vehicle for hire’

WASHINGTON — A Maryland woman says a man she thought was the driver of a for-hire vehicle tried to sexually assault her in a Capitol Hill neighborhood over the weekend.

The woman told police she believed she was in a for-hire vehicle about 4 a.m. Sunday when the driver parked his car in the 400 block of East Capitol Street in Southeast D.C. and attempted to unbuckle her pants. When the woman began yelling inside the car, the driver strangled her and punched her, according to the police report.

D.C. police told WTOP they can’t confirm whether the man was, in fact, a for-hire vehicle driver because no arrest has been made.

The woman told police she was able to escape the car and he drove away. The woman was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

D.C. police said the driver was described as a Hispanic male in his 30s, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a medium build. He was described as having slicked-back hair with thick eyebrows and moles or freckles on his face.

Police said anyone with information about the case should call police at 202-727-9099. Information can also be submitted by sending a text message to 50411. Police are offering a reward of up to $1,000 to anyone providing information that leads to an arrest and indictment.

Last month, police arrested a former Uber driver, who had been suspended from using the service, in connection with the sexual assault of a woman on American University campus. A Manassas, Virginia, Uber driver was also arrested last month and charged with sexually assaulting a female passenger.
