Police: Man fatally shot in Southeast DC on Thanksgiving

WASHINGTON — Police are searching for information about a fatal shooting in a Southeast D.C. neighborhood on Thanksgiving.

Around 7 p.m. Thursday, police responded to the 2400 block of Elvans Road in Southeast and in a parking area in front of a residence they located an unresponsive man who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man, identified Friday as 43-year-old Joseph Phill Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police located another victim who had been shot multiple times. Emergency crews transported the second victim to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, D.C. police said.

Additionally, the residence and vehicles near where Smith’s body was found were damaged by gunshots, police said.

Police have not released any details about a suspect search at this time, nor any information about what led to the shooting.

D.C. police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
