Police investigating whether cruiser struck boy on bike

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police in D.C. are investigating whether a police cruiser struck an 11-year-old bicyclist and drove away.

Police said the boy was riding a bike when he ran off the road and hit the wall of an alley. After hitting the wall, police say the boy claimed a police cruiser struck his bicycle from behind. The incident happened around 7:45 p.m.

The Washington Post reports that police investigators are sorting through conflicting accounts about Thursday night’s incident. Portreona M. Brown, the boy’s mother, said he told her the cruiser struck his bike and left.

Brown said the officers were interested in the fireworks hanging out of his pocket. Some are illegal in the city. The boy told his mother that the cruiser struck the back of his bicycle before an officer checked the fireworks and handed them back. He said the cruiser then drove off.

Brown said her son still has a limp from the incident, The Washington Post reports.

According to the statement from police, the Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating what happened and if procedure was followed.
