WASHINGTON — A police officer shot a man who fired a gun multiple times on a busy street in D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.
Around 1:45 p.m., an armed man fired multiple shots in the 3800 block of Georgia Avenue in Northwest. A police officer on bike patrol in the area responded to the scene, engaged with the gunman and shot the man, said Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham.
Emergency crews transported the gunman to a nearby hospital where he is being treated for a gunshot wound. The officer was not injured, Newsham said.
It is not yet clear what led to the shooting and Newsham said he doesn’t know if the man was aiming at anything in particular.
D.C. resident David Dasilva saw the gunman and said he appeared to be firing randomly.
“I just saw a young man coming up Quincy, walking up Georgia toward Randolph randomly just shooting at the air, shooting at the ground. Wasn’t shooting at anyone in particular, just randomly shooting in any direction,” Dasilva said.
The shooting investigation is causing some traffic delays. Georgia Avenue will be closed between New Hampshire Avenue and Taylor Street NW through the afternoon rush hour.
