WASHINGTON — Three people are in the hospital after a fire in Northwest D.C. Tuesday morning.
Fire crews responded to a fire at 9th Street and Rhode Island Avenue in Northwest around 11:20 a.m. and extinguished the blaze. A transformer fire outside the building caused the flames, says D.C. Fire Department Spokesman Tim Wilson.
Emergency crews transported two people to an area hospital with critical injuries. Another person has serious injuries and is expected to survive, Wilson says.
The building that was on fire was formerly Shaw Junior High School.
Pepco crews are working to repair the transformer.
