Where are D.C.’s most expensive apartment rents?

Renters in the District give the landlord a big chunk of their paychecks, and one apartment search site says D.C. is now the fifth-most expensive apartment rental market in the country.

The median monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the District in May was $2,100, according to Zumper, which looked at more than 7,000 active listings in the District last month. That puts the D.C. behind only San Francisco, New York, Boston and San Jose, California, for median one-bedroom rents.

Georgetown is the District’s most expensive apartment rental market, with a median one-bedroom renting for $2,600 in May. Logan Circle now comes in second, at $2,370.

And one of the District’s newly minted residential neighborhoods has already climbed to one of the priciest: the median one-bedroom rent in Mount Vernon Square last month was $2,350, coming in at No. 3 on Zumper’s D.C. list.

At No. 1 on Zumper’s national list, the San Francisco market now commands a median monthly rent of $3,500 for a one-bedroom apartment. It is $3,100 in New York, $2,230 in Boston and, considering the incomes, a relatively cheap $2,120 in San Jose.
