D.C. law-enforcement memorial getting an upgrade, relocating

WASHINGTON — It’s a lesser-known memorial for those visiting Washington, and many who live in the city pass it every day. So during National Police Week, dedicated to fallen law enforcement officers, local leaders announced the renovation of the memorial in their honor.

Standing in front of the memorial fountain, Police Chief Cathy Lanier noted the aged look of the small 73-year-old blue pool, surrounded by red granite with branch detailing. With a small brown sign behind the fountain, she says the proposed new memorial is “more befitting of our family and co-workers.”

In speaking at the Washington-area law enforcement officers memorial service, Lanier acknowledged the memorial itself represented too many lives lost in the line of duty, including two officers who died in 2014.

Marcelo Muzzatti, with the Fraternal Order of Police, D.C. Lodge No. 1, says the organization will donate $5,000 to a museum and memorial and plans to raise more.

The restored memorial fountain will be moved to the lower plaza, between police headquarters and D.C. Superior Court. No timeline was outlined for the project.
